What is Aliyah?

Diaspora – a people group living away from their home country because it’s not safe for them there.

Aliyah –coming home to Israel for a world of displaced Jews.

For over a century, Jewish people from across the world have made Aliyah“to ascend” --returning to their ancient homeland in the Land of Israel, the land God promised them four thousand years ago. From every corner of the globe they’ve returned home to rebuild their lives and a vibrant society.

Israel’s Amazing Growth Story

Israel’s population story is full of hope and challenge. In 1945, only about 500,000 Jewish people lived in Israel. By 1950, two years after Israel declared its independence, that number had already doubled to one million.

In the three decades that followed, Israel’s Jewish population grew swiftly—from one million to three million—fueled by waves of immigration as communities around the world faced persecution and pogroms.

Why Many Jews Came to Israel

After Israel was re-established in 1948, life became difficult for Jewish people in many Arab and Muslim countries.

  • In North Africa where a half million Jews lived before 1948, now is home to around 3,000.

  • In the Middle East outside Israel, around 300,000 Jews used to live where today only a handful—maybe 200 remain.

  • In Afghanistan, no Jewish people are left, and in Iran, only about 9,000 of the original 60,000 remain.

Many were forced to leave their homes because of unfair laws, violence, and antisemitism. They needed a safe place where they could practice their faith freely — and they found that place in Israel.

Aliyah: Coming Home

Jewish people from all around the world made “Aliyah,” from Europe, others from Yemen, Iraq, Morocco, Egypt, and Iran. By the 1960s, Jews from Middle Eastern and North African countries became a major part of Israeli society.

Through Aliyah, Israel became a country filled with different cultures, foods, and traditions — you can enjoy couscous, schnitzel, and baklava all in one meal!

Freedom and Faith

While many countries in the region have pushed out their minorities, Israel welcomes people of every background. Israel protects freedom of religion — Christians, Muslims, Druze, and Jews all live and worship there. Every year Muslims from around the world come to pray at the Dome of the Rock, one of their most sacred sites.

A Nation Built on Hope

Israel’s story is not just about numbers — it’s about hope, homecoming, and survival. The people who came on Aliyah helped build a strong, free country. From tragedy and exile came a new beginning — a place where Jewish people, after thousands of years, can live safely and freely in their own land, restoring life, community, and faith in the land God gave them.
